This heartwarming film is a continuation of the classic novel. Billy Coleman (Doug McKeon) returns from WWII to his grandfather's (Wilford Brimley) home in Louisiana and attempts to readjust to civilian life, but the loss of his leg and the brutality of his wartime experiences have embittered him. Grandpa has anticipated Billy's state of mind and has a therapeutic gift waiting for him - a pair of redbone hound puppies just like the ones Billy had as a boy. As Billy struggles to overcome his bitterness, he is confronted with a second dilemma: his sister Sara, (Lisa Whelchel) develops a romantic interest in Billy's service buddy, Rainie (Chad McQueen) whom Billy believes is unworthy of her affection. In the midst of these trials, Billy befriends a young neighbour boy, Wilson, (Adam Faraizl) who reminds him of himself. Wilson's youthful fascination with the redbone hounds helps Billy to rediscover the gift of life and the joy of giving.
